Awareness Through Movement ®
Awareness Through Movement (ATM) exercises or ‘lessons’ are easy to do, of benefit to everyone, and the results can be immediate and profound. Awareness Through Movement was developed by Dr. Feldenkrais as a means to re-engage the nervous system in the kind of fundamental learning process we all have access to as children, but lose as we get older. Awareness Through Movement lessons employ innovative, sophisticated movement sequences which address every area of the body and all aspects of human functioning. Using a combination of guided attention and pleasant, purposeful movement, each lesson reveals the essential dynamic relationships in a particular pattern of movement or action. With Awareness Through Movement you can:
- Improve your co-ordination, posture and flexibility.
- Restore lost function.
- Eliminate aches and pains, and move more easily.
- Find relief from stress, and the tools for psychological growth.
- Reduce unnecessary muscular effort.
- Gain renewed physical vitality, health and emotional well-being.
- Learn to recover more quickly from injuries and how to avoid them.
- Refine artistic and athletic performance and prevent performance related injuries.
- Attain greater ease and pleasure in all your physical activities.
- Improve the fitness and agility of your brain at any age.
Testimonials about The Feldenkrais Method
The Feldenkrais Method is changing the image in the motor cortex; and our brain, feeling the freedom of the new learning, rushes to meet it.
I had suffered with chronic shoulder and arm pain that had developed into severe numbness and tingling. Nothing I did brought me any long-term relief until I started with Feldenkrais. Through a series of lessons, the chronic pain, numbness, and tingling resolved. More importantly, I learned how to manage and maintain my body to avoid these problems in the future.
Feldenkrais starts your whole life moving in new directions, with new choices on every level of your life. You must experience it. Feldenkrais has had a tremendous impact on my life. It has taught me to really listen to myself. I now know I need not stay stuck in pain. It has helped me see that I have choices, that my patterns of movement, my patterns of emotional “sludge” can change.
I have long been intrigued by this subtle form of retraining the nervous system, which I recommend to patients whose movement has been restricted by injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia, or chronic pain. I find it to be much more useful than standard physical therapy.
The Feldenkrais Method is a powerful way to unlock the secrets of our bodies. It allows the linking of movement, expression, and spontaneity, as well as providing an approach to healing physical and neurological injuries
The Feldenkrais Method is a remarkable, quick, and effective way to alleviate muscular tension, pain, and discomforts.
Following the program with the Feldenkrais Method, patients showed significant improvement in their levels of pain, decreased numbers of medications, and increased quality of life.
As a neuroscientist interested in the development and plasticity of the nervous system, it is gratifying to see how the Feldenkrais Method demonstrates these principles. The Feldenkrais Method has also greatly improved my personal quality of life – physically and emotionally – by reducing the restrictions and limitations I thought were permanent due to multiple sclerosis.
The Feldenkrais Method is an incredible, quick and easy tool, and a must for anyone who suffers from chronic pain and tension, and loss of flexibility.
The system developed by Dr. Feldenkrais has as much potential for understanding the mind/body relationship as Einstein’s general theory of relativity had for physics.
Old habitual postures and body ‘ignorance’ will retard the best progress and change that psychotherapy can accomplish. I specifically recommend The Feldenkrais Method to support and accelerate the work I do.
The unique sensory motor learning techniques of the Feldenkrais Method are exciting, enlightening, and one-hundred percent beneficial.
The Feldenkrais Method is an extraordinarily effective approach to enhancement of posture, balance, movement and behavior.
The Feldenkrais Method revolutionized my work. This sensitive and caring method is an important way we can achieve our most rewarding results.
After just a few moments of Feldenkrais exercises, people often find themselves, as if by magic, easily doing things with their bodies that they never thought possible.
The Feldenkrais Method (has) had remarkable success in a wide range of complaints ranging from the debilitating to the merely nagging.
